Questions to Ask the Pediatric Dentist at Baby's First Appointment

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you make an appointment with a pediatric dentist when your baby's first tooth emerges, but no later than the first birthday (AAPD). At this appointment, there are some important questions to ask to ensure you get your baby’s dental hygiene off to a great start.

  • Is it okay for my baby to use a pacifier? If so, which type of pacifier do you recommend? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • How often should my baby use the pacifier, and what age should he or she be weaned from it? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • Is it okay for my baby to suck their thumb? What age should he or she stop? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid serving to protect baby’s teeth? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • Are there any habits I should avoid to protect baby’s teeth (e.g. bottle in the crib)? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • Which type of cup do you recommend (open, straw, sippy), and when should I start offering a cup? __________________________________________________________________________________

  • When should I wean my baby from using bottles? __________________________________________________________________________________
